As many of you know, this Sunday falls on the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Many churches will no doubt hold special services and, in fact, the President himself is speaking that evening at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
While we recognize the enormous impact 9/11 has had and will continue to have on the world, I would invite you to see Sunday as a time of personal soul-searching and reflection. While we honor the date as citizens, let us honor the day as Christians. As we spend our time of worship together, let us remember that God Himself is the author of history. As we remember the sacrifices of everyday Americans to purchase the price of our national freedom, let us remember also the ultimate sacrifice that Christ made for all mankind. As we are reminded of the forces of darkness in our world, let us not forget the spiritual darkness from which they spring.
10 years may seem as a moment or as a lifetime depending on what transpires during the days, weeks and months of that time. We know, however, that ten years or ten thousand will not be but a pause on the length of eternity.
I hope to see you in worship this Sunday.
